A severe earthquake has devastated western Haiti this Saturday morning. Authorities claim that 227 people have been confirmed dead or missing, as Haiti is now in a state of emergency. A 5.2 magnitude aftershock was also reported 20 minutes from the initial shaking, followed by several other minor shocks.
Democratic Congress woman Val Demings of Florida tweeted this statement:
As tropical storm Grace raced toward Haiti the earthquake soon followed, Leaving buildings crumble and people devastated as their homes fell. The recent quake has been compared to the devastating earthquake quake they had killed an estimated 300,000 people in 2010. Even so hospitals are overwhelmed and already on the strain with the worsening COVID-19 pandemic and this disaster that has been felt today.
Extensive damage can be seen across all of Haiti, as the number of casualties begin to grow. Prime Minister Arielle Henry of Haiti has been said to be mobilizing all available government resources to help victims of this tragic disaster.
